See a Lawyer
The Indianapolis Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) is the only organization in Central Indiana that provides an appointment with an attorney usually within one week – typically less than three business days. During the initial interview, an attorney will listen to your problem and then provide advice, offer to represent you, or refer you to another organization. A person who does not qualify for representation due to financial or other reasons may be referred to a panel of private attorneys who accept cases from us.
- An appointment is required
- Legal Aid services are provided free of charge to individuals and families with incomes of less than 125% of the federal poverty guideline levels
- We handle only civil and family law cases
- We do not handle money-generating or criminal cases

What to Expect
When you walk into our office, you will be greeted by our receptionist and you will be asked to sign in. You will then wait for an available attorney. The wait is usually less than 15 minutes; however, some days the wait might be much longer. For reasons of confidentiality, other family members or friends who come with you may be asked to remain in the waiting room.
When you first meet with an attorney, he or she will collect information about you, your case, your income/assets and your family. The attorney will discuss the details of your case with you, and then evaluate your case to determine whether Legal Aid is able to assist you.
Legal Aid provides services free of charge to individuals and families with incomes of less than 125% of the federal poverty guideline levels. If your income is above our guidelines, you may be referred to a member of our Lawyer Referral Service. If there are other reasons we are unable to assist you, the attorney will discuss additional options you may pursue. Follow this link to learn about other legal resources available to you.
