A majority of the Society's clients have issues that involve family law. We also handle a significant number of cases involving bankruptcy, housing, property, debt, and a whole host of other miscellaneous issues.

The majority of the legal issues that ILAS addresses involve the interests of women, children, and the elderly. ILAS does not handle fee generating cases (as the private bar can profitably do these) and criminal matters. Among the family issues that ILAS expertly handles are adoption, paternity, visitation, guardianship, support, custody, and divorce. Clients that we regularly assist include women in need of protective orders for themselves and their children, couples wishing to adopt, elderly individuals wishing to resolve housing issues so that they can remain in their own home, and grandparents wishing to properly care for their grandchildren through guardianships.

Huge obstacles are removed when any of these legal issues are resolved for a family. Family members are able to move on with their lives – without fear and uncertainty – and to become more productive.

During the initial interview, one of our attorneys listens to the client's problem, and then advises, represents, or refers that client. A person who does not financially qualify for representation is referred to our unique service for the working poor – a referral panel of private attorneys who accept cases from us on a reduced-fee basis.

Locally supported ILAS differs from all other providers in Central Indiana in that it is the only service where individuals are able to meet immediately (or within a day or two) with a qualified attorney.

Uniquely, ILAS is immediately available by appointment to clients from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Our concern for our clients is such that they can usually get to see one of our attorneys sooner than they would have if they had made an appointment at a private law firm.

ILAS provides services to individuals and families with incomes of less than 125% of the federal poverty guideline levels. According to the 2000 census, there are more than 200,000 people who would qualify for our services in Central Indiana.
